Sindiso Khumalo – a textile nerd

AUTUMN_WINTER_14_6

Sindiso Khumalo is a self-confessed “textile nerd.” My kind of lady! Born in Botswana and raised in Durban, Sindiso is a textile designer living and working in London. In February 2012, she launched her eponymous label and this year was a speaker at Design Indaba 2015.

Drawing on her Zulu and Ndebele heritage, Sindiso creates complex graphic designs with a special focus on sustainable textiles for her womenswear collections. Her bespoke prints and modern, architecturally inspired collections are beautiful.

Her SS15 collection, launched immediately after her Design Indaba presentation with her models appearing in the walkways of the auditorium and making their way to the stage, is a departure from her familiar bright, bold prints of previous ranges. With neutral colours and delicate patterns, the collection is graphic in a very subtle way.

“The main inspiration for the collection was the idea of a body changing,” Khumalo explained after the launch. She became a mother last year and was inspired by the memory of the woman she was before, and the woman she is today. The collection features many white on white prints and sees her using silk organza for a subtle and delicate look.

The entire collection was handmade and hand-printed by Sindiso in her London-based studio.
