out & about – Four&Twenty cafe and pantry

if you’re in the Cape Town area and haven’t yet visited the scrumptious Four&Twenty Café in the quaint Chelsea Village of Wynberg, then I’d suggest you make a plan to do so! It’s one of my favourite places to go and the menu, ambience and pantry goods will certainly put this friendly café on the Cape Town go-to restaurant list.

We all have dreams right? Well, two classically trained Grande Diploma Cordon Bleus chefs took a dream that was born at the foot of the Eiffel Tower – over a box of macarons – and made it into a delicious reality. With the resolute objective to create every single bite in their café a celebration of good, wholesome and truly delectable food, the lovely ladies behind Four&Twenty have created a Parisian gem in the heart of Chelsea Village.

The Chop Shop – Onion Marmalade

I’m sharing a little project I’ve been working on recently … it comes from both my kitchen and my studio.

tear-to-you-eye
It’s one of those sticky stories that might bring a tear to your eye – because it does for me! It’s the tale of my onion marmalade & how it began in a place where a love of good design meets a love of something yummy to add to a sandwich.

For many years I’ve made onion jam/marmalade/relish, quite a few jars at a time, and given them to friends as edible gifts. My onion marmalade has a touch of chilli and it’s a delicious sticky addition to burgers, curry, sandwiches and particularly good on pizza! After a few hints of encouragement friends & an order from my brother and his partner’s coffee shop, I decided to take my sticky sideline to the next level. I tested my “recipe” out (which involved actually writing it down with the correct quantities as opposed to my usual haphazard “bit of this & a bit of that” style), bulk bought glass jars from Consol & set about designing the perfect label…because simply sticking on a doily with my handwritten scrawl just isn’t my style! Sticking with my love of monochromatic, I designed a simple black & white label lettered with some cool typography and sent them off to be printed.

Then the name. The Chop Shop – because there’s a lot of chopping involved, and because I wanted a brand name that could be edgy & hip, if it wanted to be.

Now, the logo – anyone who has ever consecutively chopped more than one onion will know the sad feeling of tears running down your cheeks as you peel and slice onion number 3 or 4. So hence the aviator goggles for The Chop Shop logo. It’s the only way I can get through all that onion chopping without smudging my mascara … and because it’s a bit of fun!
